Announcement of the 2027 Young Designers' Exhibition Annual Theme — "Evolving: Iterating Underway" and its 6 Dimensions

The definition of design today ought to be re-envisioned as a dynamic and iterative process rather than a singular one-time solution. It is time to focus on the mechanisms for evolution in designs.

In a contemporary era defined by accelerating technology and compounding global challenges, the future is full of high uncertainty, as stated by our 2026 theme, “Fluid Boundaries”. Only by being inclusive, flexible, and receptive to interpretations can design continuously address evolving demands amidst the fluid problem-landscapes.

The 46th Young Designers' Exhibition (YODEX 2027) announces its annual theme: "Evolving: Iterating Underway. " Focusing on creating mechanisms for evolution in design, the theme puts emphasis on designs’ affordance for iteration, regeneration, and transformation as they are implemented and used over time.

We invite the young designers to use this theme as a conceptual starting point, free themselves up from the search for a perfect final solution, and instead incorporate changing needs and expectations as part of their designs, to arrive at not a resolution but a methodical starting point.

What does it mean to be "Evolving"? A Perspective on the Fundamental Transformation of Knowledge and Design in the AI Era

When artificial intelligence and technology are experiencing exponential growth, the traditional knowledge structure — once perceived as static, hierarchical, and disciplinary — is thoroughly reshaped. As information and technology self-iterate on a daily basis (or faster!), a fundamental paradigm shift is occurring for the role of design. Designers and stakeholders can no longer follow the past routine of procuring an unalterable, once-and-for-all "perfect solution" for the problems of tomorrow because those problems will no longer be independent events.

This is precisely the essence of "Evolving. " When faced with an uncertain future, next-generation designs must break free from the mindset of a “finale” and instead shift toward developing design systems capable of adapting organically alongside their users’ changing needs and trends. We envision design as a force that gives rise to new branches of evolution. By preserving difference and openness through continuous iteration, this force of design shall transform change from a challenge into the catalyst that continually generates diverse possibilities for the future.

 


 

Six Core Dimensions

The 6 core dimensions are meant to be referenced as a directional guide when understanding and expanding the year’s theme. Participants may choose to make a direct connection to one or more of the dimensions, or produce quasi-related rationale in reaction to them.

 

1. Adaptability / 適應性


UP UP BED PLUS, 上海等等幾木家居設計有限公司 (2025)

Adaptive design can dynamically adjust over time and in response to user needs, free from the limitations of rigid forms or permanent configurations.

  • Reference Case: The " UP UP BED PLUS" features an extendable structure and modular accessories, allowing users to use it from infancy all the way to 18 years old. As they grow up, it can be disassembled and reassembled into everyday furniture, flexibly evolving alongside their life cycle.

2. Resilience / 韌性


Living Breakwaters, New York, Scape (2024)

Resilient design does not collapse or fail when subjected to external impacts, pressures, or disruptions. Instead, it possesses the capacity for self-repair or rapid recovery through diverse networks and resources.

  • Reference Case: Widely considered a model for climate-adaptive nature-based infrastructure, “Living Breakwaters” is a $111 million project with a layered approach to risk reduction—enhancing physical, ecological and social resilience along the South Shore of Staten Island. Designed to slow and, eventually, reverse decades of beach erosion along the Tottenville shoreline, the breakwaters are constructed with “reef ridges” and “reef streets” that provide diverse habitat space, with live oyster installation expected after completion.

3. Variation / 變體性


Microsoft Surface Adaptive Kit, Microsoft(2021)

 


Atkinson Hyperlegible Font, Braille Institute(2020)

Moving away from a "one-size-fits-all" specification, design with variation introduces small-scale or localized customizations to create different versions or usage scenarios, thereby catering to more diverse target groups.

  • Reference Cases: Microsoft's "Surface Adaptive Kit" utilizes small accessories, such as tactile indicators and pull tabs, making existing devices much easier to operate for individuals with visual or physical impairments. "Atkinson Hyperlegible," a typeface developed specifically for individuals with low vision, deliberately maximizes the distinctive outlines of each letter. It not only assists those with limited vision but its unique geometric aesthetics have also made it highly favored by designers in general.

4. Diversity / 多樣性


Floating University, Berlin(2023)

Viewing design as an ecosystem that simultaneously accommodates differences and plurality, this dimension pursues equitable coexistence and symbiosis through a multiplicity of solutions, aesthetics, and practices.

  • Reference Case: Berlin’s “Floating University” is a nature-culture learning site. It is located in a polluted rainwater retention basin of the ex-Tempelhof Airport. The basin is simultaneously a working infrastructure of the city's water system and a home to wetland plants, birds, frogs, bats and foxes. As a site for architectural experimentation, the campus structures are deconstructed, redesigned, rebuilt every few years; currently they include an auditorium, multipurpose classrooms, workshop spaces, kitchen, greenhouse, and bar.

5. Mutation / 突變


Bio Melanin Fibre Fashion, Khajornsak Nakpan(2022)

In the creative process, designers proactively introduce randomness and surprise while gracefully embracing potential imperfections, treating unexpected disruptions as opportunities to break free from conventional frameworks.

  • Reference Case: A bio-fibre was synthesized from soil bacteria through a process that holistically considered the full production cycle, ensuring that it generated no waste. The final material contained melanin pigments similar to human skin tones, with hues complementary to the skin tones of people from Thailand.
  • Keywords: Aesthetics of Imperfection, Generative Design 

 

6. Exaptation / 擴展性


OpenStructures, Christiane Högner and Thomas Lommée(2009-now)

Intentionally leaving "blank spaces" or preserving open possibilities. Through re-understanding or re-deployment, existing technologies can uncover brand-new values within entirely unpredicted contexts and domains.

  • Reference Case: Rather than prescribing finished products, “OpenStructures” establishes a universal modular grid and operates a wikipedia-style platform that is open for all contributions. Components are intentionally designed to be recombined into unforeseen objects, allowing future users—not the original designer—to determine new functions. The community continues to evolve and grow as more iterations are explored and shared.
