Keigaika - Form without essence

Department of Arts and Design, National Taipei University of Education

The inspiration behind this series comes from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man. The sci-fi horror aesthetic portrayed in the manga deeply resonated with me. To incorporate that atmosphere into my own work is not only a creative challenge, but also a form of personal fulfillment. Starting from this concept, I began drawing references from various works I had seen—such as astronauts and animal skulls—and gradually merged these elements through hands-on experimentation, leading to the development of this series. Enhancing the emotional impact of the pieces through detailed craftsmanship became my main focus. I carefully consider and often revise both the choice of animal species and the design of the helmets. Throughout the production process, I continue to explore new techniques, never settling on a fixed form. Just as characters in manga evolve over time, I aim to reflect that same sense of transformation and progress within my work. This work is inspired by the concept of Keigaika—a state where form remains but essence is lost, as in the Japanese context. At the same time, it draws on the Chinese interpretation of "abandoning the body," expressing freedom from constraint. It explores the tension between form and liberation.
