Tai Chi Mountain Shadow (Recycled Coffee Grounds Incense Holder)
Department of Commercial Design, Hsing Wu University
Inspired by Taiwan’s five major mountain peaks, this design integrates the Tai Chi philosophy of the interplay between emptiness and substance, using minimalist sculptural language to present the yin-yang harmony of mountain forms and their reflections. Recycled coffee grounds combined with gypsum are crafted into incense holders and flowing incense trays, giving new life to discarded materials and promoting resource recycling in line with SDGs Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. The black incense holder symbolizes substance, bearing the weight of the mountains, while the white smoke embodies emptiness, drifting lightly to illustrate the harmony of yin and yang. Lighting an incense stick invites a moment of inner peace amidst the mist, evoking the balance of nature and the poetry of coexistence with the environment.
