2020 Young Designers’ Exhibition Changed to Online Exhibition for First Time in 39-Year History!

Due to the influence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, the “39th Young Designers’ Exhibition (YODEX) 2020,” which was originally scheduled to be held at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 2 from May 22, 2020 to May 25, 2020, will now take place as an online exhibition. From the selection to submission of physical entries, an online format has also been adopted for the “Young Pin Design Award.” An event due to be held in conjunction, which will continue take place in order to encourage students to create and recognize outstanding works. Students will not have to attend in person. Winners will receive certificates or prize money. The exhibition welcomes and encourages students to participate in the competition.

YODEX is the world’s largest exchange platform for design talents and creative exhibitions. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Ministry of Education jointly serve as advisors. The Industrial Development Bureau serves as the organizer and the Taiwan Design Research Institute serves as the executive organizer. YODEX was established in 1982 and is now in its 39th year. It is an important stage for Taiwan’s design students to showcase the results of their education, as well as a platform for companies to discover outstanding design talents and promote exchanges between industry and academia. This year, 12,000 students from 146 departments at 64 schools registered. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, a decision was made after surveying the inclinations of participating schools to cancel this year’s physical exhibition and change it to an online exhibition.

The “Young Pin Design Award” is held in conjunction with YODEX every year. Winning this award is a boon for students seeking to get employment or further their studies. To continue encouraging students to create, this year’s registration and selection processes were also changed to an online format. If shortlisted entries are physical objects, students will be able to send the works for the judges to review. They will not be required to attend in person to offer commentary. For award winners, the organizer will send certificates or prize money via their schools, and no awards ceremony will be held.
